I love a good Buff. Whatever season or weather, I’m outdoors and I’m usually either wearing one or got one stuffed in my daypack or child carrier. Consequently, when Buff UK and Kitshack got in touch with us to test something from their vast range, I was delighted. The even better news for you, our readers, is that we also have two to giveaway!
So, just what is a Buff? A Buff is super-versatile outdoor accessory that can be worn and used in countless ways. It’s pretty annoying really. Like cats eyes on a road, or the miniature, but oh-so- useful post-it-note, the Buff is one of those things that I look at with a mixture of wonderment and frustration. Wonderment, because it’s an awesome product with so many practical uses; frustration, because its brilliance is in its simplicity. Why couldn’t I think of it?
The Original Buff is constructed entirely of lightweight, breathable, microfibre fabric. One of the benefits of this fabric is that it’s extremely comfortable to wear. However, it’s far more than just an outdoor fashion statement. Designed to keep you warm in cool conditions, the Original BUFF also wicks moisture away from your skin to keep you cool when the mercury begins to rise. This means it’s great for high energy activities like mountain biking, hiking, scrambling or trail running.
However, having owned an Original Buff, I was keen to see what the winter- weight Polar Buffs could do. Consequently, I chose the National Geographic Mitla and Black Polar Buff from the autumn/ winter range to test. We’d been fortunate enough to have a little snowfall here in North Wales so our local hills and trails would make an ideal testing ground. Plus, by the time you read this, I’ll be away skiing in Italy (yay!) so I thought the Polar Buff would make a great addition to my ski kit too.
The main difference between the already excellent Original Buff and the Polar Buff is the addition of a large section of Polartec fleece. Anyone who has ever had any outdoor midlayers will probably have owned something made with Polartec. They produce a great range of insulating fabrics and this one was no different. Rather than just attaching the fleece section to the end of the microfibre, they have sewn it in. This maintains its versatility as, however you decide to wear it, you’ll still have your chosen pattern on show.
Now, the Polar Buff can be worn in an incredible eleven different ways. I told you it was versatile! It can be used as a neckerchief, headband, wristband, mask, hair-band, balaclava, scarf, bonnet, saharaine, pirate cap or beanie. When I’m outdoors my two favourite ways to wear the Buff are as a neckerchief and a headband. The Polar Buff is brilliant as a cold-weather neckerchief. The inclusion of the fleece fabric really helped to keep me warm as the wind and snow was swirling around me on a recent hike.
Likewise, using it as a headband means my ears are protected from the cold and wind. However, the top of my head can still breathe and allow me to regulate heat when I’m working hard. So, whether I’m carrying Little Bear up a mountain or going for a winter trail run, it has me covered. For these and a few more of my favourite ways to wear a Buff check out this video…
